Meet Our Past Volunteers...
Gaurav Garg

I came to know about BSS through a blog post written by Doulos Jose, a regular volunteer. The passion with which Liz and Shibu pursued their dream of doing something positive for the underprivileged kids was just overwhelming. It was an eye-opening experience. After having taught a few Engineering students I never thought that teaching elementary Maths and English could be so difficult and so much fun at the same time. Hope to visit the class again soon..!

It was so wonderful to know about BSS and get a chance to be involved with supporting these kids in whatever way I could. I have managed to get these kids some old toys, books and feel extremely relieved that it could be put to some good use. Often, these things end up as scrap, but I just realised that not everybody out there can take it granted...!

I came across BSS through a common friend, and did suspect of it having another angle to it in the initial phase. But all my fears got quashed, and I realized the joy one could get just being with these amazing kids for sometime. I screen cartoon movies for these kids often by taking my laptop to their class and also try to take them for outings whenever possible. The joy of spending some precious moments with them remain unparalleled. Go explore for yourself..!

I am particularly cautious when people approach me for helping with donations and material stuff. And I like to do my due diligence before committing support. So when I learnt about Shibu, I reached deeper to find out, and came out awestruck..!
Shibu and his wife, despite having no stable means of income, a family of 4 to take care of, had taken it upon themselves to teach slum kids around. And believe me, these naughty ones can make life difficult for even the most patient of teachers..! I would encourage everybody to visit and see for once at least. The infectious energy and overarching zeal to make a change will take you over.

I got to know about BSS in December 2012, when I was backpacking and travelling in India, through a friend of mine. Quite soon after, I met Shibu, Elizabeth and their 42 odd students in Mandi village where wealthy farm owners live beside most unprivileged and poor people. I was astonished to observe Shibu and his wife unconditional love, compassion and devotion to their goal to help and educate Shanti camp children without getting much in return. It is inspiring to meet people like them who swim against the tide without knowing the outcome.
